Recently, my co-op suggested I check out Nearpod. It is a tech tool that allows you to create interactive presentations. Within PowerPoint style presentations, you can add quizzes, polls, slideshows, and videos. You can create your own presentations or download ones made by other educators. When you signup, the website will ask you questions about what you teach and provide you with usable examples. If you are looking for a presentation pertaining to a specific topic, you just have to search using key terms. While using Nearpod, you can easily include formative assessment and instantly see results. This allows you to quickly gauge student understanding and provide constructive feedback. Personally, I think this is the most useful feature of the app. This tool can help teachers quickly see student misconceptions, allowing them to correct their understanding immediately. If the interactive activities are not enough to fully grasp the attention of students, you ensure they are staying on track by locking the app onto their device screen. Most importantly though, Nearpod is compatible with all devices and can be downloaded from the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, or Windows Store. It doesn't matter if your school uses laptops, desktops, tablets or personal devices. You can download the app for free with the Silver Edition or upgrade to the Gold Edition for $120/year. I think this is a great tool for transforming typically direct instruction lectures into more student-centered lessons. It helps to keep students engaged and allows the educator to evaluate their understanding as the lesson progresses. I found this app to be easy to use and effective in its purpose.
