What is component 2a?
Danielson component 2a tasks the educator with creating an environment of respect and rapport within their classroom. Mutual respect should be present between the teacher and their students, as well as among the students themselves. A classroom structured in this fashion fosters understanding and promotes healthy relationships.
Why do you need it?
As stated above, respect within a classroom cultivates understanding. Classrooms can house very diverse groups of people. Understanding is absolutely necessary when dealing with such diversity. Students and teachers possess the potential to come from different backgrounds, hold varying beliefs and traditions, have differing ability levels, and many other contrasts. Within a classroom of respect though, members find these differences special and intriguing, rather than ostracizing those who are different. This leads to acceptance of one another and promotes friendly relationships. Creating this type of environment can help motivate students to enjoy coming to school, rather than seeing it as a dreaded requirement. It also minimizes bullying and promotes communication and collaboration. Together, these elements promote hard work and learning to allow students to achieve to their highest capabilities.
What are the elements?
Component 2a stresses the importance of respect and rapport between teachers and students, as well as among students and their peers.
Teacher - Student Relations
Teachers should not only show respect to their students, but also genuine warmth and caring. This could include taking an appropriate interest in the personal lives. Teachers also act as mentors, being able to provide support and guidance is a crucial part of the teaching profession. This not only allows the students to feel cared about, it can also increase their interest in school subjects. If teachers know and care about their students, they will seek out the students strengths, abilities, and interests. They can then incorporate this knowledge into their lessons to better engage their students.
Student - Student Relations
Similarly, students should possess respect for their peers. When students respect one other, they value the thoughts and opinions of each person. This can do wonders within learning. Collaboration and communication built on a strong foundation of respect allows for some of the best learning opportunities. Students will genuinely listen to one another and gain perspective; they may even find that a peers insight or explanation was more helpful to their understanding than the teacher's original lesson.
Respect within the classroom allows teachers and students to better live and learn together.
