What is component 2b?
Component 2b stresses the importance of creating a culture for learning. In this type of culture, teachers display the importance and relevance of the content they are teaching. They emphasize the importance of persevering through challenging tasks, learning from failure, and continuing towards the correct answer. If done correctly, this is the stage in which teachers instill the idea of a growth mindset in their students.
Why is it important?
Creating a culture for learning places value on the content, as well as the learning process. Domain 2b helps educators teach students how to learn by providing them with ideals pertaining to growth mindset. Students with a growth mindset value their learning. Because of this, they feel that the hard work they put into difficult assignments is worth it because what they are learning is important. This keeps students from not caring about tasks and turning in poorly done work and if they do mess up, they know that failure creates opportunity for learning and personal growth. With all of this in mind, students are much more likely to take risks in their education, and therefore push themselves toward greater success.
What are the elements?
Importance of Content and Learning
- Teachers demonstrate why the material is relevant to students. If the students feel like the teacher genuinely thinks the material is important to them, they are much more likely to feel the same.
- Teachers need to set high, yet reasonable goals for students. If teachers do not expect outstanding work from students, the majority will do the bare minimum.
- If teachers coach students toward success, they will see what they are truly capable of doing.
- If students care about what they are learning, they will care about their work. They will put visibly more effort into assignments and tasks.
Artifacts of Domain 2b
Growth mindset and placing value on learning are learned actions. If educators do not purposefully teach these skills, students will not get exposure to them. To help create a culture of learning teachers can:
- Display student work and success
- Encourage students to take educational risks
- Provide opportunity for students to reflect and correct work
