What is component 2d?
Component 2d expresses the importance of managing student behavior. The atmosphere of the classroom should feel caring, yet productive. This allows for learning to successfully occur. In a classroom with proper behavior management, students know the rules and follow them because rules are seen as a prerequisite for learning.
Why do you need it?
As stated before, behavior management creates an atmosphere for productive learning to occur. When teachers explicitly express their expectations, students are more likely to oblige and manage their own behaviors. As students begin managing themselves, teachers can direct their full attention to teaching and student understanding. Ultimately, well behaved students are more engaged in the material they are learning.
What are the elements?
Expectations
- Teachers need to set clear and reasonable expectations for their students
- Teachers must be very present. They need to be attuned to everything that is happening in their classroom; this requires developing "eyes in the back of your head." When teachers are aware, they catch misconduct early and can subtly correct it to prevent further issue.
- When correcting misconduct, teachers need to be reasonable and understanding. They need to drive into why the student may be acting out. Then, they should privately speak with the student with respect to correct the behavior.
Artifacts of Domain 2d
To establish expectations for student conduct, teachers can:
- Include students in the rule making process
- Display their guidelines for behavior
- Operate their class with an explicit behavior management policy
- Discuss rules and expectations regularly
