What is component 2e?
Component 2e pertains to the organization of physical space within the classroom. Organization of the classroom is vital to student safety, engagement, and participation.
Why do you need it?
First and foremost, properly organizing physical space allows students to see and hear what is being instructed. However, classroom organization has the potential to affect so much more than that. It keeps our students safe; when designing classroom make-up, it is up to us to eliminate things such as tripping hazards. We can do this by fixing any dangling wires and keeping walkways clean and clear. We can use classroom structure to promote community and collaboration. By strategically setting up your classroom, you can harness easy discussion, group work, and whole class collaboration.
What are the elements?
Safety and Accessibility
- For learning to occur, first our students must be safe. Organize physical space to minimize accidents and injuries.
- Arranging furniture in the right way can maximize the potential of your classroom. It can make your classroom look bigger and run smoother.
- Students are part of the physical resources within your classroom. Use them to the best of their ability, just like any other resource. By organizing students in the proper seating arrangement, they can see, hear, collaborate, and learn better.
Artifacts of Domain 2e
Teachers can efficiently incorporate the use of component 2e in their class by:
- organizing student seating for collaboration and discussion
- providing flexible seating
- decorating and designing the classroom to feel inviting
- taking student needs into consideration (wheelchairs, hearing/sight impairment, etc.)
- making sure exits are easily accessible, in case of emergency
