Domain 2 pertains to the atmosphere of the classroom. This includes the feeling of respect and learning, procedures, and design present in the classroom. As educators, it is important for us to create a place where every student can thrive personally and academically. Each aspect of Domain 1 guides educators in creating the best space for success in learning and life to occur. Domain 1 has five sub-domains. These sub-domains include:
  • Creating an environment of respect and rapport
  • Establishing a culture for learning
  • Managing classroom procedures
  • Managing student behavior
  • Organizing physical space
Show proficiency of Domain 2 in your class with these ideas from teachers:
  • Establish procedures from day one.
  • Express the importance of being kind,  having a growth mindset, and working hard.
  • Revisit procedures and guidelines often.
  • Try to make classroom management fun for you and your students. Try something like Classcraft, Class Dojo, or Bloomz to make managing fun and easy. You can even create your own QR codes and have students scan them to manage procedures.
  • Procedures take time to develop and different students require different guidelines. Get to know your students and adjust or add classroom procedures as necessary.
  • Maximize your physical space. Find items that multi-task to save room and money.
